Northlands Primary Develops Multimillion-Rand Hockey Astro for Learners and Community

Northlands Primary Develops Multimillion-Rand Hockey Astro for Learners and Community
Northlands Primary School has broken ground on a multimillion-rand, international-standard hockey astro-turf and dedicated it in a move, set to transform school sport and strengthen the community.
Durban North has long faced a shortage of astro-turf facilities, with schools and clubs competing for limited practice and match slots. This lack of access has restricted opportunities for many young players. Northlands Primary, together with its governing body, in partnership with the Department of Education (DOE), addressed this gap with the construction of a full-sized, FIH-approved, water-based synthetic astro.
Northlands Primary Principal, Mr. Alistair Naidu said that this the development was a defining moment for the school, one that was bound to have far reaching benefits.

Final signing of the contract to begin the Northlands Astro build with Megan Moodley – TGC Engineers, Dave Northend – Apollo Management, Gavin Skevington – Sports Director Northlands Primary School, Ruan Van Zyl – Turftech; Philip Prinsloo, Turftech, Anthony Hoyer – Deputy Principal Northlands Primary School; Alistair Naidu – Principal Northlands Primary School; Clive Beetge – Deputy Principal Northlands Primary School and signing, John Venter, Chairman of the SGB Northlands Primary School.
“At Northlands, we believe in nurturing potential, both in the classroom and on the field. This astro is more than a playing surface, it is an investment in scholarly excellence and opportunity. This project ensures that every learner has access to world-class facilities and the confidence to reach their full potential and right here, in Durban North. Our vision has always been to prepare learners not just for school, but for life and this project is a bold step toward that, on and off the field,” said Naidu.
The project is being led by Turftech (Pty) Ltd, specialists in sports facility development. Work has already begun, with the build, including a new digital scoreboard, the creation of cricket ovals and wickets under the guidance of pitch expert, Clive Goble and his Cynodon Specialists team.
Director of Sport Mr. Gavin Skevington emphasised the wider benefits and said, “This facility gives our young athletes the consistency they need to grow their skills, while also creating opportunities for the wider community and neighbouring sports clubs to access a world-class surface. It’s an investment that strengthens school sport, builds community partnerships, and helps develop the next generation of hockey players”.
Alongside its investment in sport, Northlands Primary has become a STEM leader in Durban North and across KwaZulu-Natal, thanks to its groundbreaking work through FIRST LEGO League. In just three years, the school has set a new benchmark for innovation in primary education, using Coding and Robotics to equip learners with future-ready skills, earning first and second-place recognition at regional, national, and international levels.
