What is Resin?
Epoxy Resin is a viscous substance derived from synthetic materials that harden when mixed with a catalyst or hardener. Its origins can be traced back to natural resins found in plants, but modern resins are typically composed of compounds such as epoxy and UV resin.
These synthetic resins offer superior durability, clarity, and ease of use, making them ideal for various artistic applications.
There are two types of resin commonly used in art:
- Epoxy Resin: Known for its crystal-clear finish and strong adhesion, epoxy resin is popular for crafting jewelry, coasters, and tabletop art. It cures through a chemical reaction between resin and hardener.

What Equipment Do You Need for Resin Pouring?
To successfully engage in resin pouring, specific equipment and supplies are necessary. Here is a list of essential items:
Resin and Hardener : The core components of resin pouring are the resin and hardener for epoxy resin, or UV resin. Ensure you select the right type of resin for your project.
Mixing Cups and Sticks: Accurate measurement and thorough mixing are crucial for optimal results. Use graduated mixing cups and sturdy sticks to combine the resin and hardener effectively for epoxy resin.
Pigments and Dyes: To add color to your resin creations, use pigments and dyes specifically designed for resin. These can be powdered, liquid, or paste form, providing various effects and finishes.
Molds: Molds come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, allowing you to create diverse items. Silicone molds are particularly popular due to their flexibility and ease of release.

Here is a step-by-step guide to conducting resin pouring:
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Set up a clean, flat, and well-ventilated workspace. Lay down protective sheets or newspapers to catch any spills.
Step 2: Measure and Mix Resin
Carefully measure the resin and hardener according to the manufacturer’s instructions if using epoxy resin. Pour them into a mixing cup and stir thoroughly for the recommended time, ensuring a homogeneous mixture.
Step 3: Add Pigments and Dyes
Incorporate pigments and dyes into the mixed resin. Stir gently until the color is evenly distributed. Experiment with different colors and effects to achieve your desired look.
Step 4: Pour Resin Into Molds
Slowly pour the resin into your chosen molds or onto surfaces. For layered effects, pour in stages, allowing each layer to partially cure before adding the next.
Step 5: Eliminate Air Bubbles
Use a heat gun or torch to pass over the poured epoxy resin, popping any air bubbles that rise to the surface. This step ensures a smooth and professional finish.
Step 6: Cure the Resin
Leave epoxy resin to cure in a dust-free environment for the recommended time. For UV resin, use a UV lamp to cure the resin quickly. Curing times vary depending on the type of resin and ambient conditions.
Step 7: Demold and Finish
Once fully cured, carefully remove the resin from the molds. Sand or polish the edges if necessary to achieve a refined look.
Step 8: Clean Up
Properly dispose of any resin waste and clean your tools. Store unused resin and supplies in a cool, dry place for future projects.
