For nearly ninety years Woodridge Preparatory School has offered purpose-driven schooling, nurturing students to become the leaders of tomorrow. In keeping with their motto, Fideliter, the Latin word meaning faithfully, pupils learn to embrace new opportunities while demonstrating kindness, compassion, courage, faith, and determination. Set in a nature-rich environment, the academic approach incorporates teaching in the traditional sense of the world as well as in the outdoors, while a variety of arts, music and sports activities add to creating a well-balanced offering and well-rounded individuals.
Academics at Woodridge Preparatory School
For many years the Preparatory school, under the leadership of Headmaster Trevor von Berg, has centred its academic programme around a thematic/cross curricula approach purposefully designed to ensure that 21st century skills are at the heart of every lesson. Combined with their unique outdoor education programme, students develop the skills and knowledge to succeed in a changing world.
While this attentive approach has diligently served the school and its pupils’, methods of education, much like the environment that surrounds young learners, must evolve. With the principle goal of the school’s strategic plan being to aid pupils in becoming innovative problem-solvers the staff understood they needed an approach that would demonstrate how to ask important questions. So, within the last year, after some extensive research, participating in various Keller Education workshops and attending TSSA conferences, the dedicated staff have introduced the next logical step of purpose-driven education to their lesson plans—inquiry-based learning.

Inquiry-based learning centres around the curiosity of students carefully crafted to encourage students to ask questions, thoroughly investigate topics, and come to conclusions for themselves. For a lesson to be effective is must be fully understood, which is why inquiry-based learning shifts away from listening and remembering, and encourages deep thinking.
Sports and culture
Traditional school sports are embraced to the fullest, complemented by a host of stimulating and engaging outdoor activities like archery, fishing, mountain biking and
rock climbing. While the official sports programme at Woodridge Preparatory School offers engaging activities, it still makes way for students to embrace additional passions, such as horse riding in the equestrian centre.
Art is a primary way for students to express themselves, which is why Woodridge offers an extensive arts and culture programme. Ms Marais, or “Mamsie” works tirelessly to ensure that each student’s primal artistic instincts are nurtured, allowing their creativity to flow freely. Drawing inspiration from beyond the walls of the classroom, students create masterpieces based on what they see and feel, enhancing their mental development in addition to their problem-solving abilities.

The school additionally offers individual tuition in anything from voice to piano, brass, woodwinds and drumming, complemented by a variety of co-curricular activities like marimba, drama, choir and so much more.
