West Coast family outings: Drikus Horse Riding among the best family activities in Paternoster

Drikus horse Trails

Drikus Horse Trails – also known as Paternoster Horse Tails, is a great idea for a family activity for those visiting the town of Paternoster on the West Coast!

Paternoster is actually one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast. It is said to have a local steppe climate, which supports the growth of the famous wild flowers that the West Coast is renowned for.

Besides being known for its tranquillity, the village’s vicinity to Cape Town also makes it a popular family holiday destination – whether for quick day trips or for extended weekends.

From their base at Swartrug Farm between Paternoster and Stompneusbaai, Drikus Horse Trails has helped many of these visitors explore and experience the region’s natural beauty on horseback.

What makes an outing with Drikus unique is that they actually allow you to bring your family horses or choose from their many beautiful horses. Their horses are gentle and can be ridden by the young and old members of your family, regardless of their horse-riding experience.

Besides the sunny Atlantic beaches and farmlands, the area is a photographer’s and a bird-lover’s paradise. As a result, Drikus Horse Trails offers beach rides – either as daily beach rides or sunset rides. They also do sundowners and picnic baskets on request.

Talk to them if you also require longer family rides, stabling and accommodation.

Reviews from families, who have been to Drikus Horse Trails

“Een van doe beste perde trips in die hele SA. Ongelooflike perde en nog beter view!” wrote Inneke Mouton on their Facebook page.

Mark Truter added; “The gentle horses can be ridden by anyone even without experience.”

“As a rusty but reasonably experienced rider I couldn’t have chosen a better place! I did the regular beach ride (1.5 hours) on the first day and the lunch ride (2.5 hours plus lunch in a beach side restaurant in the middle) on the second, and both were excellent. I rode Spirit, Bonny and Moby and all were well matched to my ability. Mark, the guide, looked after me very well and was fun to ride with. He is a very experienced horseman and has lots of interesting stories to tell about his life with horses. The trails are all off-road and the beach is fabulous with long stretches of hard sand perfect for whatever speed you’re comfortable with. I really couldn’t recommend Drikus Horse Trails highly enough and will definitely be back!” said Jemma Batten.

Rooms of Africa actually named them one of the Top 6 Beach Horse Trails in South Africa.

Drikus Horse Trails is located at Swartrug Farm, just outside Paternoster. To book your horse rides, call 082 748 5596 or email drikushorsetrails934@gmail.com. Visit them online at www.paternosterhorsetrails.co.za. Here is their location on Google Maps.
