My daughter attended three different schools in her high school career. During covid she attended an online school and then immigrated to Australia with her mom where, due to her excellent marks, she was pushed up one grade. After two years of very unhappy education in Melbourne she asked to return to South Africa to complete her Matric here.
This may sound like a recipe for disastrous Matric results. However, knowing my daughter’s diligence and determination I just had to find the right school for her to complete her matric to ensure that she achieved the university pass that she wanted.
A friend who had also not enjoyed her time at a school had raved about moving to The Hill College at the end of Grade 10. She loved the school, its culture and made lifelong friends. She also completed grades 11 and 12 in one year and achieved a university pass.
Meeting with the Principle
I booked an appointment with Rodney Petit, the Principle of The Hill College, and my daughter and her mom joined the meeting on Zoom. Mr Petit was extremely helpful and realistic and there and then he confidently helped us map a course for my daughters’ success. We completed our application and my daughter was accepted.
Twelve months later and, after a very enjoyable year, my daughter sat for her Matric exams and, I am pleased to say, she passed with her desired university entrance pass mark.
What makes The Hill College such a successful school
Mr Petit says, “Quite simply, we are able to fully engage with the task of education with minimal side issues, and intrusions; concentrating on the real issue at hand – progressive education.”
My daughter, who is mature beyond her years, said that she had a sense of belonging that she had not felt at any other school and that the environment was constructive on every level.
What type of education is offered by The Hill College
“The Hill College has a clear, but sensible code of conduct which is guided by our Vision, Mission and Belief Statements,” adds Mr Petit.
When I first met with Mr Petit he stressed that trust was a very important part of the ethos of the school. The scholars and teachers were trusted to treat the school and each other with decency and kindness. To be honest, I was a bit sceptical about this knowing a little about teenagers. However, a year down the line and it was obvious that the young adults at The Hill College enjoyed learning in this environment and embraced it.
Mr Petit says, “We believe that learners are individuals who in a positive, safe and supportive environment, when treated as young adults, encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and futures, maximize their individual ability and strive for personal excellence.”
Scholars are not required to wear a uniform and are encouraged to express their individuality.
The Hill Collage works with in the CAPS education system as registered with the Department of Education as such. The classes are small, and learners can expect individual attention.
The Hill College is a specialist grade 10 – 12 school and focuses predominantly on academics. The college does not offer formal sport, due to not having enough students to complete a team. Learners are encouraged to participate in club sports, or individual sports. My daughter joined a karate club, made new friends, participated in competitions and won a medal or two.
Statistics on the school website state, “The average learner improves 10 – 15% on at the Hill College. This could be the difference between acceptance or rejection into a chosen field of study or residence”. It also states that in the past years the pass rate has been very close to 100%.
My daughter loved her time at The Hill College. It suited her on every level and the school, under Mr Petit’s able management, helped her to regain her self-confidence and achieve the results that she desired.
