The French School Booms in Cape Town: Reaches 400 Students, Seeks New Campus for Growth

The French School Booms in Cape Town: Reaches 400 Students, Seeks New Campus for Growth

The International French School of Cape Town has today enrolled its 400th student, marking a new chapter in its growth. In response to this increasing demand, the school is actively seeking new campus facilities that will further enhance the delivery of high-quality education.

As the only school in the Western Cape providing a fully bilingual educational curriculum (French and English), the French school continues to attract families seeking a world-class, bilingual and multicultural education with an annual growth in enrolment of 10%.

The French School has a diverse community of students, which comprises about a third French, a third international and a third South African, with many children having dual nationality. This blend of cultures enriches the learning experience, creating a dynamic environment that encourages cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. The French School is part of the AEFE (Agence pour l’Enseignement Français à l’Étranger), which governs 600 French schools in 140 countries, ensuring the highest standards of educational excellence, with a single curriculum and strong values.

With its two campuses (one in Sea point and one in Gardens) , the School enrols children from 2 years old (TPS – Toute petite section) until the French baccalauréat (effectively matric). The school also offers a British International Section, Cambridge International examinations as well as, starting this year, the Bacccalauréat français international. The recent introduction of the International section (2022) has been a key factor in the school’s growth. This programme ensures that students achieve full bilingualism in both French and English, equipping them with essential language and soft skills, on top of acquiring the fundamental learning disciplines. This enables access to the best universities worldwide.

Principal Samuel Jourdan expressed his pride in the school’s achievement: “Reaching 400 students is a testament to the passion and dedication of our staff, along with the strong support from our community. Our focus on providing an exceptional foundational education uniquely positions us to cater to both local and international families.”

The school’s primary section has experienced particularly rapid growth, earning a reputation for its outstanding foundational education. The curriculum not only supports linguistic development but also fosters critical thinking, creativity, and early exposure to mathematics in a nurturing environment.

Tamra Capstick-Dale, the President of the Board, highlighted the school’s commitment to innovation: “The success of our school is a reflection of the innovative teaching methods we employ, ensuring that our students receive an enriching international education within the French education system that sets them up for global success, irrespective of their mother tongue.”

In light of its continued growth, the school is actively looking for new campus facilities to meet the needs of its expanding community. This strategic move, meant to take place in the coming years, will enable the school to provide more space for learning, for sports facilities, thus furthering its mission of delivering an exceptional quality of education.
