Looking for a great family outing or holiday activities for your adventurous clan? If you are in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the Natal Midlands region, then pop in at the Karkloof Canopy Tours.
This is a must do family and group activity especially for nature lovers or adventure seekers looking to do something truly unique. A canopy tour basically involves zip-lining from one platform to another often over a forest – in this case, the scenic Karkloof Forest Reserve in the KwaZulu Natal. The Karkloof happens to be the second largest indigenous forest in Southern Africa!
To help you navigate this forest from above, the Karkloof canopy tour consists of 12 platforms and 10 zipline slides that zig-zag down a pristine forested valley. For your peace of mind, their professional guides are also always on hand to ensure the safety of your family while providing interesting facts about the forest ecology during the tour. This memorable two-hour zip-line adventure experience is designed for both the young and old members of your family – we are talking ages between 6 and +95 years.
What your family can expect at Karkloof Canopy Tours
When your family arrives at Karkloof Canopy Tours, you will start with a detailed safety briefing – its safety first.
After that, you move onto a ‘Kitting up’ session where everyone gets their full-body harnesses, pulleys and climbing equipment. When everything has checked out, you are then taken on a short scenic 4×4 drive to the top of the Karkloof valley, where the action starts.
You notice that all the platforms are built high up in the forest canopy and all offer amazing views of the forest, a magnificent 20m waterfall, clear sparkling forest stream and the expansive Karkloof valley far below.
The Karkloof Canopy Tours guides will also be on hand to explain the various fauna and flora found in the forest.
Besides the canopy tour, Karkloof Canopy Tours also offers zip-line experiences and trails and also caters for school groups and corporate teambuilding. The Karkloof canopy tour is only one-and-half hours from Durban, near Howick in the Midlands.

Reviews from people who have been there
“An incredible life experience. The views are amazing. The guides are fantastic. Loved every minute of my experience. I did it as a child but enjoyed the experience more as an adult because I was able to appreciate the beauty of the Karkloof,” wrote holly031sa on their TripAdvisor.
alant889 added; “This was a birthday gift to remember. The staff and guides were highly professional… This was our first experience of a Canopy Tour and hopefully it will not be our last. The location in the afromontane forest is superb and with 12 stages it is really worth the experience. Friendly and professional staff and guides made this a worthwhile adventure.”
