Set on a 475-hectare farm on the road between George and Oudtshoorn, Highlands Lodge Mountain Retreat is a small retreat covered with pine plantations, indigenous mountain fynbos, mountain rivers, and freshwater springs.
Natural colours and aromas combine harmoniously, creating a tranquil retreat in the forest, a garden with a children’s play area, and plenty of interesting spaces for children to explore.
A coffee shop and restaurant on site offers a selection of delectable snacks and sweet treats, as well as beers, ciders, wines, soft drinks and good coffee. Guests may enjoy a meal on the deck or in the restaurant, or fill a picnic basket and head out for the day to one of the many picnic spots on the farm.
Not to be missed every Sunday lunch time is the Harvest Table at Highlands Lodge Te-eeT Restaurant. Here you can indulge in slow roasted Wagyu beef and a homemade sourdough bread, side dishes and gourmet salads. And if you are there on a Friday night, the generous dinner platters are a must try.
Accommodation at Highlands Lodge Mountain Retreat
The retreat offers thirteen charming log cabins, each providing a cosy and private retreat among the trees.
The cabins which can sleep from two to six guests, all have private entrances, a wooden deck, and braai facilities all overlooking the natural scenic surroundings and the majestic Outeniqua Mountains.
Two of the cabins are suitable for an overnight stay with tea/coffee facilities, a microwave and a bar fridge. The rest have two bedrooms and a bathroom, are self-catering with an open plan kitchen and a living area.
Two of the cabins are semi attached and when rented together are ideal for a family or larger group and can sleep twelve altogether.
The cabins are non-smoking, cosy, clean, bright and cheerful with modern furnishings and are serviced daily. Six of the cabins have fireplaces. Parking is free, and as this is a mountain retreat there is no TV or Wi-Fi available.
Whether you are staying at the retreat or just visiting for the day, there is no shortage of activities to keep the whole family entertained. The pool area is great for a relaxed swim, and there are plenty of picnic spots both by the pool and in the forest. For the more adventurous, there are excellent hiking and mountain biking trails, all set in a safe and scenic environment.
Within a 30km radius, there are plenty of attractions for the whole family to enjoy. These include quad bike trails, wine stores, ostrich farms, the Cango Caves, the Outeniqua Choo Choo, beaches, Deli’s, coffee shops, strawberry picking farms, the historic Montague Pass, and Fancourt Golf Course.
