A trio of promising young minds has made their mark in the city of Gqeberha, following in the footsteps of their accomplished parents.
The children of three surgeons at Netcare Greenacres Hospital – Dr Johan Coetzee, Dr Vikesh Gajjar and Dr Christiaan Joubert, have emerged among the top matriculants in the Eastern Cape, paving the way for promising futures.
Diya Gajjar, daughter of orthopaedic surgeon Dr Vikesh Gajjar and Dr Bhavna Morar, a general practitioner focusing on women’s health, matriculated from Pearson High School and secured the top spot in the province with an impressive 96.1% average.
Inspired by her family’s medical legacy, Diya is heading to the Western Cape with her heart set on medicine, where she will pursue her dream of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. Reflecting on her success, she humbly shared, “It is an absolute privilege to have had the resources to work towards this accolade.”
Right behind her is classmate, Chris Joubert, son of plastic surgeon Dr Christiaan Joubert and Esme Joubert who is a speech therapist and audiologist. Chris secured the second spot in the province with an impressive 93.3% average and eight distinctions. Set to study mechatronic engineering at Stellenbosch University, Chris attributes his success to the unwavering support of his teachers, family, and friends. “I was once again reminded that it is worthwhile to work hard for what is important to you,” he said.
Completing the dynamic young trio is Johan Coetzee, Grey High School’s head boy and a standout athlete with eight distinctions and a third-place ranking in Cluster B, which combines The Bay, Sarah Baartman, Amathole West and Chris Hani districts in the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
Johan, son of urologist Dr Johan Coetzee and Dr Etreshia Coetzee, a general practitioner, says he is ready to begin his medical journey at Stellenbosch University. Driven by a desire to make a difference, Johan sees his future in medicine as a way to leave a positive imprint on the world.
Reon van Rensburg, the general manager of Netcare Greenacres Hospital, expressed immense pride in the accomplishments of these young individuals on behalf of the hospital staff and management. “As these young people set out on their own paths, we at Netcare Greenacres Hospital wish them all the best for their futures. Their accomplishments are a reminder of the incredible things that hard work and dedication can achieve, and we look forward to seeing them grow to take their place in the world,” he says.
“These remarkable achievements highlight not only the potential of these young leaders but also the legacy of excellence instilled by their families and the supportive community of Gqeberha,” van Rensburg concluded.
