Built with Love: DIY Projects to Make Father’s Day Special

Built with Love: DIY Projects to Make Father’s Day Special

Why buy something when you can build it – together?

With Father’s Day around the corner, why not skip the shop-bought socks and get hands-on instead? From clever caddies to boot racks and braai essentials – it’s not just about the gift – it’s about the time spent building it together.

“DIY projects are the perfect way to bond as a family,” says Orlando Luis, CEO of Brights Hardware. “You’re not just making something useful or decorative – you’re creating memories, learning skills, and building confidence together.”

So grab your tools, call the kids, and turn this Father’s Day into something meaningful. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Make a Hook Board for Winter Jackets or Dad’s Tools

The idea: A practical and useful wall-mounted rack.

This one’s a game-changer for busy households. Create a custom set of hanging hooks for jackets, scarves, keys, tools, or dog leads. Add names, labels, or paint each hook in a different colour to keep it fun and personal. You can also make a smaller version to go in Dad’s cupboard for belts and ties. Or make one to hang next to the braai to hold the tongs, apron and other braai utensils.

How-to:

·         Choose a plank of wood long enough for your chosen number of hooks.

·         Sand and paint or stain the board – let kids choose colours and help decorate.

·         Mark equal spacing for the hooks, then screw them in with help from an adult. You can also use drawer knobs for the “hooks”.

·         For added fun, write or stencil names above each hook (e.g., “Dad”, “Doggo”).

·         Mount it at kid-height near the front door, kitchen, or garage.

You’ll need: Wood board or plank, hooks or knobs, paint or stain, screws, drill, wall plugs for mounting.

“These kinds of practical projects add real value to everyday life,” says Luis. “They’re quick to make and incredibly useful. Plus, kids love choosing their own hook!”

Build a Boot Rack

The idea: A winter-friendly boot stand that keeps shoes organised and dry.

Keep muddy winter boots in check by making a boot rack using wooden dowels, broom handles, or even sturdy branches from a pruned tree. It’s simple, neat, and adds a rustic touch to any hallway or garage.

How-to:

·         Cut a solid wooden base and drill evenly spaced holes.

·         Insert vertical dowel rods into the holes and secure with glue or screws.

·         Let the kids paint or decorate each boot peg.

You’ll need: Wooden base, dowel rods, drill, screws or glue, paint or varnish.

Make a Match and Firelighter Holder

The idea: A practical seasonal idea for fireplace essentials.

Create a handy holder for matches, firelighters, and lighters to keep next to the indoor fire or braai area. Add a label that reads “Dad’s Fire Kit” for a fun touch.

How-to:

·         Use wood offcuts or a sturdy tin/crate. Other items that can be used include a large empty coffee tin, a washing powder box, an old biscuit tin, an empty ice cream tub, or even a shoe box.

·         Decorate with paint or stencils.

·         Add compartments if desired for organising different fire-starting bits.

You’ll need: Your chosen container, dividers (optional), paint, glue, stencils or markers.

Build a Wooden Bedside Organiser

The idea: A smart and stylish wooden bedside caddy that holds phones, watches, glasses, books, or even a mug – perfect for a nightstand or bedside table.

How-to:

·         Cut a flat base piece of plywood for the organiser to sit on (around 25–30 cm wide).

·         Attach a vertical backboard at a 90-degree angle to the base — this can support items like a phone, book, or watch.

·         Add small dividing blocks or compartments using offcuts to hold keys, pens, or earbuds.

·         Drill a hole or groove to run a charging cable through.

·         Sand all surfaces smooth, then paint, stain, or let the kids decorate it with their own flair.

·         Optional: Add a raised ledge or a phone slot for devices to stand upright.

You’ll need: Plywood offcuts, screws or nails, wood glue, sandpaper, drill (for cable holes), paint or stain.

“These types of projects are great for tweens and teens to get involved with, especially if you’re starting to teach them to use basic tools safely,” says Luis. “They’re practical, rewarding to make, and perfect for personalising.”

Make a DIY Gift Kit

The idea: A custom “starter kit” filled with DIY goodies – perfect for dads who love tinkering or crafting. Help the kids assemble this and add a homemade “DIY Coupon” that promises help on the next family project – it’s the kind of gift that keeps giving.

How-to:

·         Fill a small toolbox or crate with basic DIY tools.

·         Add labels or vouchers.

·         Decorate the box with ribbon or artwork.

Kit ideas: Sandpaper, gloves, small paint pots, brushes, measuring tape, a few hand tools. “A perfect item for this kit is a Brights Hardware voucher.”

Why DIY Is the Real Gift

A DIY survey conducted by Brights revealed that a whopping 71% of South African families love tackling DIY projects together – and not just for the end result. The biggest motivator? Spending quality time as a family, followed by the chance to get creative, learn new skills, and build confidence in kids.

In fact, 77% of respondents said DIY time is their top choice for bonding and making memories as a family. “Doing DIY as a family turns gifting into something meaningful,” says Luis. “Whether it’s a colourful birdhouse or a functional boot rack, the value is in the effort and the love behind it – not just the finished product.”

With DIY, it’s not just the item that’s built – it’s confidence, connection, and creativity too.

“Whether you’re planning a gift project for Father’s Day or just a weekend of meaningful family time, Brights Hardware has everything you need – from timber and tools to paints and finishing touches. Plus, our expert staff are always happy to help with advice or ideas.”

This year, help the kids build something from the heart. Because the best gifts aren’t just wrapped – they’re made together.
