Art on Target Art School – A creative sanctuary

Develop your child’s creative potential and enroll them at Art on Target

Art on Target Art School is located on Target Kloof Road, just on the edge of the picturesque Baakens Valley.

The art school boasts excellent facilities for artists and art enthusiasts, offering large, well-equipped studio spaces filled with light.

No matter if you are young or old; experienced or in-experienced, there is a wonderful selection of art classes on offer. You can start at any time of the year, be it a short course or an all year round class.

Kids Connection had the opportunity to talk to the director of the Art School, Bretten- Anne Moolman, and ask her why Art on Target is the best extra- curricular art establishment in Port Elizabeth.

Here is what Bretten- Anne had to say at our Q and A

Q. What is the overall vision behind Art on Target Art School?

Art on Target is a unique cornerstone for creative empowerment and development. For novices and professional artists alike, inspired and imaginative growth in the visual arts can go nowhere without hard skills, opportunity and experience.

It is Art on Target’s mission to place the right people and the right resources at PE’s disposal to foster an environment of artistic excellence.

Q. What led you to open an art school in Port Elizabeth?

As an art educator, I have been teaching art in Port Elizabeth for over 15 years and found that there was a need for a visual art centre.

Art on Target has been operating since 2010 and in this time we have come into contact with many talented students that simply don’t have the facilities to pursue a visual arts education. Art on Target facilitates arts education and provides a much needed service.

Some of our students, especially from poor urban areas, have pursued visual art of their own volition, as it is not offered in their schools or communities. Art on Target has provided these students with the necessary skills to enter tertiary education.

Q. How long has Art on Target been running and how has it grown over the years?

Art on Target has been running since 2010 and started out with one teacher, myself.

Overtime it has grown and now there are five educators all together- Cedric Vanderlinden, Estelle Marais, Jonathan Silverman and Karl Schoemaker. Other art teachers do come in from time to time to offer short courses.

Q. Tell me a bit about the children’s art classes?

I teach children’s classes (6-12 year olds) on Thursday afternoons from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

The youngest student is 6 years old. The child art classes are very popular, as we develop a child’s creative skill set, which contributes to problem solving skills and the ability to think independently.

The art enrichment programme, which takes place on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30pm to 5:30pm, is the next level up. This programme fine tunes the visual arts language and skills set to prepare students for opportunities after school.

Q. Tell me a bit about the adult classes on offer?

The adult classes are attended by young and old adults.

In these classes, people can foster their love for art and develop their skills. Whether it’s a hobby or a move towards a career, the teachers at Art on Target will give sound tuition and advice on the current art market.

The adult art classes offer- photography, painting, drawing and mixed media. The classes explore a range of materials and subject matter which include- figurative art, landscape painting and portraiture. There are also short courses on printmaking.

Q. Tell us a bit about the teachers you have teaching at Art on Target, are they qualified in the field?

All the teachers at Art on Target are formally qualified with art Degrees or MA’s. Cedric Vanderlinden, Estelle Marais, Jonathan Silverman, Karl Schoemaker and myself, are all qualified art professionals and practicing artists.

Q. What events are coming up at Art on Target?

The Port Elizabeth Art Meander event will be taking place from Friday 26th of October to Sunday the 28th. Art on Target will have art stalls, where you can buy original art work and there

will be a short film screening on the day, so please come and join in the festivities.
