It was during the recent Easter holidays that my family and I found ourselves at Ouma’s Farmhouse, situated in the pristine Garden Route countryside, along the Seven Passes Road, between George and Knysna.
We were received by the owners, Hennie and Magdel Niehaus, who led us to our weekend farm house, nestled among mature, indigenous trees of majestic height.
I immediately fell in love with the place. The kids in our group, set free from the confines of the cars, ran through the huge, natural garden laughing and stopped frequently to look into the depths of the large Khoi fish pond.
The farmhouse interior, like most old buildings, had large rooms and has a neat mixture of antique and modern elements. Apart from the substantial entertainment areas there are four spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The bedrooms offered enough beds for our two families and in one of the rooms was a cot for those travelling with a baby. We found the beds comfortable and the linen clean and fresh.
The spacious living area offers comfortable furniture, a TV and a well-appointed dining area. We found loads of games and puzzles to keep the younger ones busy as well as a treasure trove of interesting books and magazines for the adults.
The kitchen is well-equipped with everything required for a comfortable self-catering stay – a fridge/freezer, stove, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, etc. A container of freshly baked rusks, with a welcome note, left a smile on our faces.
A spacious, enclosed entertainment area, with gorgeous views of the garden and built-in braai and an antique Dover stove from ‘Ouma and Oupa’s’ days, completes the setup.
This is where we spent our family time and where we created our late night memories. The long wooden table with its lovely little lamps, served us well.

Ouma’s Farmhouse is well centered for visiting the surrounding attractions – horse riding, mountain biking, and golfing and of course, trips to Wilderness and Sedgefield, with their lovely beaches and excellent restaurants.
Most of us, especially the kids, enjoyed exploring the garden and surrounding forest.
It was with great sadness, although revived, that we drove past the Ouma’s Farmhouse main gates on our way back to the city as the Easter holidays ended. Everyone agreed to return for another relaxing but fun filled weekend.
